A two-week food plan that works without a stove
El Niño seasons are uneven. Some regions flood, others dry out, and grocery shelves can empty either way after a storm or a road closure. Two weeks of familiar food is a calmer target than a closet full of meals nobody will eat.
Start with what you already cook
Each shopping trip, add a few extras of foods with a long shelf life: rice, oats, pasta, canned beans, canned fish or meat, nut butter, shelf-stable milk, and fruit cups. If someone in the house has a medical diet, infant formula, or a food allergy, store those items first. They are harder to replace in a shortage.
Keep a manual can opener with the cans. A full pantry is not useful if the only opener is electric.
Assume one day with no cooking
Storms knock out gas and electricity. Set aside food that needs no heat and little water:
- Ready-to-eat cans and pouches
- Crackers, tortillas, or bread you can freeze ahead of a known storm
- Peanut or other nut butters, if nobody is allergic
- Dried fruit, protein bars, and cereal
- Comfort foods children will actually eat when the routine is broken
Paper plates and a bag of trash liners save clean water that you would otherwise use for washing up.
Rotate it, do not bury it
Put newer items at the back and eat from the front. Check dates at the start of rainy season and again six months later. Canned food stored above 32°F (0°C) and below about 85°F (29°C) stays in better shape than cans left in a hot garage.
Pets need their own food and water. Write their amount into the same two-week list so it is not an afterthought on the night a storm arrives.

Manual can opener
A sturdy manual opener belongs in the same box as the cans. Test it once before you need it.
